Devorah Sacks -Founder/Main Teacher

She has since made nine visits to Mysore. In 2000 Devorah was honored to receive Pattabhi Jois’s blessing to teach the Ashtanga method, and has received her Level 2 Authorization through KPJAYI and Sharath Jois.

Devorah’s greatest influence on the Ashtanga path and beyond is Dena Kinsberg. She was blessed to meet Dena very early on in her practice and has studied extensively with her since 1998.  In 2001, Devorah traveled to Byron Bay, Australia to study in her shala. Their relationship continues today and Dena continues to be a huge inspiration in both her practice and her life.

Devorah also studies Sanskrit and is  blessed to learn from her teacher Dr. M.A. Jayashree each year in Mysore and via skype during the months they are apart. When here in San Francisco Devorah studies with her teacher Kiranavali at the Brahmananda Ashram.

The traditional teachings of Tantra have helped bring balance to the ashtanga practice and also offered a  deepening into some of the more subtle aspects of yoga. Devorah is a certified Yoga Nidra teacher and teaches both group and individual Yoga Nidra classes.

Devorah’s teaching is grounded in the tristhana method, using breath and bandha, posture and looking place as the three foundations with  which the whole practice unfolds.

In addition to Devorah’s yogic studies, she is a licensed somatic psychotherapist and has extensive training in trauma centered psychotherapy. She is certified in Genrative Somatics through Stacie Haines and has completed studies with Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk on using somatic practices, in particular yoga,to help heal complex trauma and PTSD.  She is also certified in Trauma Sensitive Yoga.

Devorah was featured in Sonima‘s 2016 list of “100 Most Influential Yoga Teachers in America.

Claire Lavery

I came to Asthanga yoga in 1991 and am still attracted to the graceful rhythm of the practice and its power to align the physical with more intangible experiences.  I have been teaching since 2001,   using adjustments and adaptive poses often to deepen each student’s practice.  My own practice and my teaching include continuing inquiry into alignment, pranayama, and meditation.  I have worked with disabled students under the leadership of Saraswathi Devi since 2003, and I am a Yoga Therapist registered with the International Association of Yoga Therapy.   I would like to thank all my yoga teachers and acknowledge the significant influence of teachers Leigha Nicole, Devorah Sacks, Nancy Gilgoff, Tim Miller, and Pattabhi Jois.

Two other crazy things I love are swimming – especially in the ocean, even in winter – and playing classical flute, but not at the same time.
